Architecture, modernisation & technical advisory

Make complex technology easier to understand, change and operate.

Independent engineering perspective for teams making consequential decisions about architecture, legacy systems, scalability, integrations and delivery priorities.

Problems I can help solve

When the next technical decision is not obvious.

Architecture work is often about making trade-offs visible. I help teams understand their current constraints, identify risks and compare realistic options before committing to a large rewrite or platform change.

  • Assess an existing application or platform architecture.
  • Identify coupling, scaling constraints, integration risks and operational bottlenecks.
  • Plan a gradual modernisation path for legacy applications.
  • Evaluate service boundaries, APIs, data ownership and event-driven designs.
  • Improve cloud, deployment and engineering delivery practices.
  • Support founders and engineering leaders with technical decision-making.

Assessment deliverables

A decision-ready technical roadmap.

  • Current-state architecture overview
  • Risk, dependency and technical debt map
  • Priority bottlenecks and root-cause hypotheses
  • Options with trade-offs and constraints
  • Prioritised 90-day roadmap
  • Leadership readout and discussion

Working method

Diagnose before prescribing.

The assessment is evidence-led. Recommendations are separated from assumptions, and unknowns are called out rather than hidden. A modern architecture is not automatically the right architecture; the answer depends on product needs, team capability, operating model and constraints.

Understand the context

Review product goals, users, system boundaries, team structure and operational constraints.

Inspect the system

Review available diagrams, code, interfaces, deployment patterns and operational evidence.

Compare options

Make trade-offs explicit across cost, risk, complexity, time and maintainability.

Prioritise change

Sequence actions into practical steps, with dependencies and validation criteria.

Relevant experience

Architecture shaped by implementation experience.

My engineering background spans microservices, event-driven systems, multi-tenant platforms, API gateways, cloud infrastructure, payment systems and technical leadership. I use that experience to evaluate the specific system in front of me—not to force every client into one preferred architecture.
